Shichimensou - "momiji koyo" of the sea

Written by Musubi

Shichimensou are annual plants which grow to between 20-40cm in height on mud flats where there are less wind, currents, or waves.  They are most abundant along the Higashiyoka-kaigan seashore in Saga Prefecture.

In the spring and summer, the plants are green but in late autumn, they turn red just like momiji (maple) tree leaves do.  As a result, they have become known as the maple trees of the sea and are one of Saga City's sightseeing attractions during the fall season since it turns the Higashiyoka-kaigan seashore into a huge red carpet.

Location:  Shimokoga, Higashiyoka-cho, Saga
