The Kishigawa Line in Wakayama has Tama the tortoiseshell cat as its stationmaster while Aizu Railway's Ashinomaki Onsen Station in Fukushima Prefecture has バス (Bus), a charcoal-gray furball stray cat who settled into the station years ago.
Bus (a play of course on Nekobus) made the station its home and quickly became a passenger favorite. The cat did not mind being touched by people and was named the stationmaster in April 2008.
The popularity of Tama has also proven a good thing for this Aizu stationmaster cat since the number of passengers at the station has increased 6.3%. Sales of Bus related goods including a keyholder have also been brisk selling upwards of 1,000 units.
From Tokyo, the station is nearly 3 hours away via Shinkansen and a transfer.
Animal stationmasters have become the in-vogue thing that other stations have also adopted. Okuyama Heights Station in Iwate Prefecture has a dog named Maron who took over as stationmaster in June 2008. Its popularity has also been on the rise which has resulted in a collection of photos being released.
